Steven T. Simmons, MD

Steven T. Simmons, MD is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and a member of the American Glaucoma Society. In addition, he is an associate clinical professor of ophthalmology at Albany Medical College and a former president of the Spaeth International Glaucoma Society. Dr. Simmons grew up in Troy, New York and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Hamilton College and received his medical degree from the University of Rochester – School of Medicine and Dentistry. He completed his internship and ophthalmology residency at Albany Medical Center Hospital, and his glaucoma fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital under the direction of George L. Spaeth, MD.

Dr. Simmons is a recipient of the 1997 Honor Award and 2005 Senior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology for his contributions to Ophthalmology and the field of glaucoma. He was an editor and then the senior editor of Book 10 Glaucoma: The Basic Science Series for the American Academy of Ophthalmology from 1995-2005. Because of these contributions, he received the Secretariat Award in 2007 from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Steven was honored with the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Resident Education from Albany Medical College for his work in resident teaching while director of resident training. He has been selected yearly as one of the “Best Doctors In America” by his peers since 2003.

Dr. Simmons has been a principal investigator in over 30 clinical trials studying the treatment of glaucoma and has received grant support from numerous organizations including a 10 year award from the National Institutes of Health – National Eye Institute as a principal investigator and member of the Steering Committee in the Collaborative Initial Glaucoma Treatment Study. Steven has published over 25 papers in peer-reviewed journals on the treatment and management of glaucoma and related ocular disease and has given over 500 talks on the field of glaucoma. In addition to his book publications, Dr. Simmons has authored 8 book chapters in other glaucoma text books. He has taught courses and served as a visiting professor at colleges and eye research institutes and societies across the country. He has been a respected consultant for numerous companies involved in the field of Ophthalmology developing new medications or devices used to treat glaucoma. Dr. Simmons’ research interests in the field of glaucoma include new pharmaceutical development, adjunctive use of glaucoma medications, and glaucoma surgery.

Dr. Simmons is married to Cecile, has three grown and successful daughters, and makes his home in Altamont, New York.
